I think the margin of profit for fitness clubs is dependent on those who pay, but whose main exercise is shoveling food into their mouths. The company kept on buying the memberships for two years and of course, that was just fine with our club's owners. One of them came only a single time and the other for about a month. It's hard to believe, but of those, only two ever came to the club, even once. One company had purchased memberships for more than 250 people. I looked at the attendance records for those groups. I think they qualified for lower rates on their medical insurance, if they provided exercise opportunities. The club sold discounted group memberships to large companies, for their workers. Some of the New Year's resolution members kept coming, but spent most of their time in the sauna, steam room or hot tub and rarely did any exercise. But they thinned out fast, before two weeks had passed. When I worked at a large fitness club, there was always a big rush of new members after Jan. I had one of those and no more! But it means I go whenever which is mornings and mostly the crowd remains the same. If people go to a gym and GAIN weight? how likely are they to continue going or paying for membership. A slice of pizza is 300 calories or 30 minutes on an elliptical at a brisk pace. I also hope that some of the New Year's Resolution people stay and get healthy. Fortunately, the 2 clubs I use near my home always have enough of my favorite machines that I don't have to wait. According to the podcast, the other perks (massage beds, free pizza one day a month, free bagels another at Planet Fitness) are there to keep the "fringe" engaged and continuing their memberships even though they don't work out very much. My attitude is, they support the rest of us. I once heard a Planet Money podcast and an insanely high % of members in general stop going after the first month or so but keep paying their membership. Hopefully things will get better for you during Peak Hour in about mid-Feb. I guess the new year is the "Black Friday" of the fitness industry. New faces mosying on the cardio equipment.Īnd within 2-3 months I start to see the drop-off. It's tough having to go to the gym and workout at Peak Hour.īut the vast majority of us (myself included) don't have a choice b/c of our work schedules.Īs for New Year's Resolutioners - isn't it so automatic, like clock-work? It was arms day for me.Īgain, let me make it clear that we don't hate new year's resolutioners. I did 6 routines, 3 sets each, 8-10 reps each set. We were able to finish everything we wanted to do in 30 minutes. We dealt with it by doing our routines as fast as we could with very little breaks in between. This evening, we went to the gym and oh my goodness it was so crowded. We both work full time as professionals, and we both go into our offices early in the morning, so the only time we can go work out is right after work. We go 5 days a week.Īs much as we love seeing new faces at the gym, you gotta admit that it's not very pleasant to have the gym overcrowded. We love to see people trying to better themselves mind and body. First of all, I would like to make it clear that we love seeing new faces at the gym.
